Jesus Christ used parables, analogies, allegories and symbolic words to describe past, present and future events that illustrate and explain spiritual truths. In this post, let's explore God's use of wine and the great wine press.

Before we begin, please understand that this post is written by just another soul saved by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Simply stated, the writer is only a layperson fascinated by the intense depth of GOD's word recorded in the Holy Bible and not an ordained Minister of the Word.

"NO ONE PUTS NEW WINE INTO OLD WINE SKINS..."

Let's start at the beginning in Genesis. Jacob mentions the vine and wine in Genesis Chapter 49 during his final words to his sons. In this chapter, Jacob is foretelling all his sons' generational future. In verses 8-12, Jacob turns his attention to his son Judah and uses the vine and wine symbolism (verses 11-12). In this oracle, Jacob alluded to Jesus Christ, whose human lineage came from the tribe of Judah.

11 Binding his donkey to the vine,

And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,

He washed his garments in wine,

And his clothes in the blood of grapes.

12 His eyes are darker than wine,

And his teeth whiter than milk.

Then, about 1200 years later, the Prophet Zechariah provided another insightful glimpse pointing to Christ in Zechariah 9:9:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your King is coming to you;

He is just and having salvation,

Lowly and riding on a donkey,

A colt, the foal of a donkey.

Finally, about 500 years after Zechariah's prophesy (about 1700 years after Jacob's oracle to Judah)

we read in the New Testament; this prophesy is fulfilled:

Matthew 21:6-11

So, the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and he sat on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!

‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’

Hosanna in the highest!”

10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”

11 So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Now, back to the wine....
